Alterating the façade of a derelict builiding in the city center.
distinction and assignment of the project
The concept
The competition is about the facade redesign of aa derelict building in the University campus in Thessaloniki. The proposed solution aims to an easily manufacturable solution, economic, architecturally sophisticated and environmental friendly. The proposal retains the existing geometry while it attempts to disrupt it by adding a new skin, consisted by many parallel new surfaces with variable uses.
Three main materials are selected to constitute the new skin (textiles, perforated metal panels and floral decoration-local plants). The placement of materials on all four sides was based on local climatic data. The change of seasons affects the visual result of the intervention as the floral decorations changes throughout the year and the different needs of users create a dynamically changing facade. The proposal aims to at social, environmental and aesthetic improvement of the area.
