Architecture in Extreme Conditions/ Mobile HIV Clinic
poster presentation in UIA’s Conference “UIA –PH & CIRFS FADU UBA in Buenos Aires under the title “New Trends in Health Facilities”.
This project is about designing in areas with extreme political, natural or social circumstances. The main mission of architecture in such cases is to fulfil the immediate needs of the local people taking into account the local characteristics and resources and be great for the sake of humanity.
The Mobile HIV Clinic is used for preventing, curing and raising the awareness about HIV in the African continent in the beginning. According to statistics the highest percentage of mortality because of HIV is detected in Botswana, which consists the starting point of the tour of the clinic. The clinic is easily adaptable, mobile and energy sufficient. The exterior walls are made of louvres that when shut can still let light inside, as the wooden louvres alternate with glass ones. Some of the louvres are replaced by some stable ones where the specially designed furniture can be hung and provide the floor plan with the needed flexibility. Finally, some local materials are used as well, such as reeds for shading the open air areas.
The project was presented in UIA Public Health Group 2009 seminar in Buenos Aires. "New Trends in Health Facilities"
