The new cultural triangle
This project is about a Design Museum in the historical site of Ladadika in city of Thessaloniki, that will shelter an existing collection of industrial design objects, owner of which is a local industrial designer Mr. Delialis. The site has set some principles that influenced the design.
The square and the entrance procedure
In addition to this, the design aimed to connect visibly and actually the two existing squares that lie right next to the site, creating that way a plazza-"estia". The "estia" is located in two different vertical levels. The semi-underground level, that is housed by a synthesis of sloped triangles, is the entrance to the museum and someone has to look for it within the site. The entrance procedure functions as a filter for the visitors before entering the exhibition, providing the necessary stimulants.
The Exhibition Space
The museum is combined by a cubical protective semi-transparent shell- in order to invite the passenger inside- and the hanging cube that is actually the museum. In the space between the two structures the objects of the permanent collection are hanged so as to provide a three-dimensional view of the them.
The walls of the hanging cubical structure are the show cases of the objects and some cantilevers allow a more direct contact with the hanging objects. The vertical circulation is served by a central staircase on the cube that get the visitors to the library and to the where there is a space for projections walls of the surrounding buildings. In addition to that, there is the possibility to project films and other documentaries relevant to the function of the museum.
