objectives & proposalThe project is about the refurbishment of an existing building (it is used for educational reasons). Sustainability is developed both by reusing existing structure and by introducing new technology and designing according to the local characteristics and resources to provide an environmental friendly building.
The building is divided into two parts that are connected with corridors, creating a central skylight that brings sunlight into the very down of the building and aids the natural ventilation and the stack Effect. The new facade and roofing system is made of metal mesh panels and are arranged in such way in order to create an uneven facade surface. The metal mesh shell protects the existing concrete structure from the weather conditions but it also allows the natural light in. The main functions of the building (classrooms, labs, lecture rooms) in both of the parts of the building are oriented to the south, because better daylight is provided. For this reason, the horizontal circulation has been placed perimetrically of the rest of the functions. Some extra spaces have been added to the South Facade, that can work as sun spaces or some recreational areas when the weather conditions allow it. MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE REFURBISHMENT.
