The research paper “Four dimensional architecture, designing for the homeless” studies the socio-political phenomenon of homelessness. For the holistic approach of the phenomenon, the study reffered to other sciences, such as psychology, history, etc. While in the last century the homeless shelters tend to create a new architectural typology, there is no systematic record of them, resulting into limited literature sources.
The survey dealt with the exploration of contemporary homelessness situation (size, characteristics, causes leading to homelessness). It also attempted to record and evaluate the official actions of the greek state about social policy on housing, the public space design and the development of homeless shelters. The complexity and sensitivity of the problem requires cooperation of various sciences (interdisciplinary planning teams-design) for holistic understanding and treatment of homelessnedd. Because the shelters that will accommodate homeless people have as a basic purpose of their reintegration in society is also necessary to investigate the psychosocial needs of people living in the street. Finally for the effective operation of these stryctures, development and effective integration of the reintegration process, specific and properly designed spaces required. In this context we studied and analyzed examples of modern homeless shelters, supsupportive housing buildings and re-uses of building stock. Analysis of selected examples of supporting showed a series of common architectural characteristics. The investigation focused in particular on the spatial features of these structures, which affect the psychology of the users (eg. Lighting, materials, colors, openings, etc.). |
